Make-Ahead French Toast Bake


I realize I already posted a recipe for a French Toast Souffle' last month, but I happened to have an entire loaf of bread that no one was eating so I decided to use some of it up and thought this recipe looked yummy too.  This one is a little different and uses brown sugar instead of maple syrup to sweeten it and also is pretty simple to throw together... you don't even have to cube the bread, it just uses the whole slices.  If you are watching your waistline, this probably isn't the best recipe but it is pretty yummy and would be great to serve to guests or to make for a holiday brunch!  I would probably never make this for just John and I, but since our kids will be around this weekend I thought they would enjoy it.

Make-Ahead French Toast
1/2 cup of butter
12 slices of white bread (I used hillbilly bread because that is what I had on hand that no one was eating!)
¾ cup of brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon

6 eggs
1½ tsp. vanilla
1½ cups milk
Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)



Directions:  Spray 9 x 13 inch dish.  Melt 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter in microwave and pour in pan (I just melted the butter right in the 9 x 13 dish.)  Lay 6 pieces of bread on top of the butter in dish.  Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle 1/2 of the mixture on top of the 6 slices of bread in the dish.  Lay the next 6 pieces of bread on top of the brown sugar making a second layer in dish. Sprinkle with other 1/2 of brown sugar and cinnamon. In separate bowl whisk 6 eggs, milk, and vanilla together and pour over everything, soaking bread.  Cover and refrigerate overnight.  In morning, cover dish with aluminum foil and bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.  Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.  Dust with powdered sugar before serving if desired.  Serve with additional syrup on the side.


Spray 9 x 13 inch baking dish with non stick spray and 
melt butter in the bottom of the pan

layer 6 slices of bread in bottom of pan over the butter,
Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together and Sprinkle with 1/2


Top the sugar layer with another 6 slices of bread


 Put remaining brown sugar cinnamon mixture on top of bread slices


 Whisk 6 eggs in medium bowl


 Add vanilla and milk


 And pour over everything in pan


 Press down slightly with back of large spoon to make sure all bread is coated


 Cover with aluminum foil and place in refridgerator over night


 Remove from fridge and bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.  
After 30 minutes remove foil and continue baking for another 15 minutes


 Remove from oven and dust with powdered sugar before serving


Cut in slices and serve with additional syrup if desired
