Homemade Kahlua

Kahlua is a coffee flavored rum based liqueur from Mexico.  Creamy sweet and delicious are the words I would use to describes this popular after dinner beverage, usually mixed with cream.  This sweet coffee flavored liqueur is used in cocktails and specialty drinks but is also yummy in different baking recipes like cookies, brownies, and cakes!  I love the taste of Kahlua (well I pretty much love anything with made with coffee) and it is a special treat especially served as an after dinner drink or even over ice cream. Unfortunately Kahlua is pretty expensive and it is usually reserved for special occasions... that is until I found a recipe to make a homemade Kahlua (funny enough I found the recipe in an old church cookbook from North Carolina called Pass the Plate!) It is incredibly easy and really delicious!  It only has a few ingredients and is really simple to make.  If you like Kahlua you should definitely give this recipe a try!

Homemade Kahlua
1 quart of vanilla vodka (I use vanilla vodka but most recipes call for regular)
4 cups water
4 cups sugar
1/4 cup instant coffee   
1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract

Directions:  Bring water and instant coffee to a boil over med/hi heat in a large pan on stove top.  After it comes to a boil stir in sugar and bring to a boil again.  Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes stirring occasionally. Let cool naturally and then add the vodka and vanilla.  Pour into container or decorative bottle, store in refrigerator.  Enjoy yourself... or give as a gift to someone special! 

Gather ingredients

Mix water and instant coffee in large pan on stove and bring to a boil

 Stir in the 4 cups of sugar

Bring back to a good boil again, then reduce heat and 
let simmer about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally

Choose a pretty bottle to put your homemade Kahlua in

 I love pretty bottles, I have a collection of green ones that I 
have acquired over the years, they have mostly come from 
garage sales, consignment stores or antique shops... it's always fun to 
collect something, it gives you something to "hunt" for!

Let the syrup cool until room temperature and then add the Vodka 
(I usually don't buy expensive vodka for this, with all the sugar
 and coffee you can't tell the difference!)

Add the pure vanilla extract and stir well

Use a funnel to pour it into the bottle 

Hopefully you don't sample so much that you won't
have enough to fill your bottle!  (Please drink responsibly)

This makes a large recipe (about 4 cups) so it would easily fill 
up two smaller bottles for gift giving around the holiday's!

We enjoy our Kahlua with a little bit of fat free half and half... a creamy delicious after dinner drink and so nice to serve when company is over. Mix a batch of this up and pour it into a few cute gift bottles from your local home store, (Marshall's, Homegoods, and TJ Max stores have some great ones), tie a pretty bow at the top, and you will have some great Christmas gifts!  I think I might brew up some for my brother this Christmas!
